6. Durdle Dor

Description
A short walk from Lulworth brings you to Durdle Door, a classic sea arch. Here the hard Portland limestone strata is tilted to the vertical to form a resistant barrier to the sea. As at Lulworth the sea has eroded the softer rocks behind, leaving the upstanding limestone to wear away more slowly, in the process forming this temporary arch.
In the background is the Isle of Portland where more extensive deposits of the limestone are quarried to be used as a fine building stone
