Description
Ascension Island is a recently formed part of the Earth's surface. It emerged from the Mid Atlantic Ridge, where the Earth's crust is moving apart and is marked by a line of volcanic activity, stretching from Iceland to Tristan da Cunha. Ascension is classed as "dormant".
Ascension has an arid climate and there is little vegetation, although every few years it enjoys more humid conditions and acquires a green cover.
