Little of the five storey structure remains. The most complete part is the dungeon with which is associated a grisly story.
Hugh Macdonald conspired to assassinate his brother the clan chief but somehow managed to mix up his letters to the assassin and his victim, thus revealing the plot. His punishment was to be fed salt beef, then locked up in the dungeon to die slowly of thirst. When his body was removed from the dungeon his fingers had been worn down to the palms through his clawing on the rock. His thirst-mad screams are said to be still heard in the castle at night.
